The art and design of Roy Good
Help support the making of the film
Over the past two years, a small team has been working away on a feature length documentary on one of New Zealand’s greatest modernist painters, Roy Good. Roy’s story is a fascinating one, not only because of his lifelong dedication to one of the most important visual styles to emerge from 20th Century art, but also his contribution to New Zealand’s visual culture more widely. From his earliest days studying at Canterbury College School of Arts, to his pioneering set designs for the pop show ‘C’mon’ which blazed through TVs into living rooms from the mid 1960’s onwards, Roy has played a valuable role in shaping the visual culture of New Zealand.
After a successful show at Aotearoa Art Fair in 2022, Roy experienced something of a resurgence of his work, and what initially started as a small ‘artist bio’ project, has now become a broadcast standard piece of beautiful documentary film making.
Thus far, the project has been funded entirely by Scott Lawrie Gallery and film Director, Craig Ray, who has devoted hundreds of hours to this project. The film is scheduled for a private premiere in November 2025. And as well as a domestic launch, we are hoping to submit the documentary to international film festivals around the world. But before we can, we need your help.
